//-->The graphic design and layout of this booklet was inspiredby, and is reminiscent of, the style used by the Polishunderground press. While under Communistleadership, nearly every aspectof life in Poland was closelymonitored by the government. The Main Office for the Controlof the Press, Publications, and Public Performances(GUKPIW) maintained controlnot only on the content ofpublished materials, but accessto photocopiers, printingmachines, and other printingsupplies, such as paper andink. This strict oversightforced those members of Polishsociety fighting againstCommunist rule to turn to morecreative ways to get theirmessage across.Just as their parentsand grandparents had done fordecades, the members of theworkers’ rights and human rights’ groups throughout Poland turned tothe underground press to keep their movement alive. These publications, printed illegally, both domestically and abroad, kept the publicapprised of upcoming strikes and other news relating to democraticmovement, as well as the names and addresses of those to whom politicalprisoners could turn for help. In addition, the underground press inPoland served as a venue for the free-flow of ideas, otherwise snuffedout at the hands of government censors.SPONSORSThe National Clandestine Service (NCS) operates as the clandestine arm ofthe CIA, and serves as the national authority for the coordination, deconfliction, and evaluation of clandestine human intelligence operations across the IntelligenceCommunity.
